CBD Honey

Introducing Haughton Honey infused with broad-spectrum CBD.

Haughton Honey HQ lies among the rich dairy pastures and ancient oak trees of South Cheshire, close to where it borders Shropshire. For centuries it has been cattle country, famous for its creamy milk and its distinctive crumbly cheese.

Now we have combined our English raw honey with carefully-sourced, British CBD. The cannabidiol oil that we use is produced to the very highest standards. We are offering the best of both worlds; the acknowledged benefits of CBD and the finest honey our countryside can produce.

Our 340g jars contain 850mg of British 40% broad-spectrum CBD with retained terpenes in MCT** oil for a maximum effective dose.

 DID YOU KNOW?

Unlike many other forms, our CBD infused honey retains the essential terpenes which, although anecdotal**, are thought to be the most efficacious element for the relief of the symptoms of a range of health issues and everyday problems.

What is CBD?

Rather than answer this question in our own words, what could be better than quoting the award-winning health and fitness journalist Danielle Kosecki? “CBD, or cannabidiol, is a chemical compound from the cannabinoid family that naturally occurs in the cannabis plant. Scientists have isolated 108 different types of cannabinoids in cannabis. CBD is quickly gaining ground due to its potential therapeutic benefits.

“CBD works by interacting with our body’s endocannabinoid system, a regulatory system made up of naturally occurring cannabis-like molecules. These endocannabinoids, as they’re called, work like neurotransmitters, shuttling messages through the body to help maintain homeostasis. Cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system at two known receptors: CB1 and CB2.

CB1 receptors are mainly present in the brain — where they’re involved with cognition, memory, motor skills and pain — but also in the peripheral nervous system, liver, thyroid, uterus and more.

“Although the exact way CBD affects our bodies is still unknown, scientists think CBD encourages the body to produce more of its own endocannabinoids, which may help reduce anxiety, pain and inflammation”.

It’s our loss that we ignore nature’s natural remedies

With the recent legalisation of CBD in many parts of the western world, increasing numbers of people are taking it and reporting considerable health benefits. The majority of users take it in oral spray or drops form, but we thought we could make the experience a lot nicer and more wholesome, which is why we have introduced Haughton Honey infused with CBD. However, as stated elsewhere, whilst our customers constantly and consistently report improvements to various health issues we must stress that, at this point, all benefits are anecdotal

Are there any side-effects?

We know of none. There have been reports of side-effects with synthetic CBD (fatigue, stomach upset, changes in weight and appetite).

The CBD additive we infuse our honey with is organic and natural. You can see independent laboratory test results on our website under Certification below.

Dosage

How much CBD can you – should you – be taking, and how much is there in Haughton Honey with CBD?

CBD-infused foodstuffs are now quite numerous in the USA and Canada, including honey. We looked at everything on the market over there and calculated the average CBD content. We left out two honeys which had a ludicrously low CBD content, and without them the average was 0.25% (it doesn’t affect the calculations, obviously, but the majority of American honeys with CBD are sold in very small jars – some as small as 100g. We sell ours in the same size jars as our ‘ordinary’ honey – a full 340g).

At 850mg of 40% CBD our jars contain 1% of pure CBD – a medicinal dose – and we recommend taking between two to two and half teaspoons per day, ideally in the evening an hour or so before bedtime (this has come from plenty of customer feedback).

Like any supplement it needs to be built up in the body and, most importantly, maintained. Try and avoid ‘stopping and starting’ your intake if you can.

Researchers seem to agree that taking any more that our recommended dose doesn’t lead to increased efficacy; it depends on your build, but it’s the optimum amount. Anything above that is unnecessary.

The first thing that many of our customers notice is a vastly-improved sleep pattern, followed by the relief of the symptoms of a range of underlying health conditions as listed above.

CBD really is a broad brush.

Pure honey – as nature intended

So far as CBD sprays are concerned, as with other medicinal sprays some of the compound is lost in the mouth so not all of it is absorbed into your system. Plus, of course in a typical High Street spray, you get 5% in 500mg which means that there is 20mg of CBD in total, as opposed to 850mg of 40% strength MCT in Haughton Honey infused with CBD.

All in all, eating honey with CBD is more efficient…and much more tasty.

Buying CBD Products

When it came to legalising CBD Canada and the USA were more prepared than we were here in the UK. Individual states had led the way; California was the first, making medicinal cannabis legal in 1996.

Companies of all sizes had been anticipating the legalisation and began offering products with CBD very quickly indeed. These are now an impressive range on offer in North America, from simple drops and sprays right through to fruit-flavoured popcorn and gummy bears with CBD (yes, really).

In the UK it is much simpler: In 2018 the Home Secretary Sajid Javid made all possession of CBD legal, so long at the THC content (the bit that gets you high) is less than 3%.

Cannabis oil is as pure and natural as the honey itself

There was immediately a lot of financial interest in growing hemp for medicinal purposes, including a stock market listing of a company to do just that right at the end of 2018. The range of CBD products is very limited at the time of writing; just sprays and droppers, and not a hint of CBD foodstuffs – let alone strawberry CBD popcorn.

That’s why we at Haughton Honey decided to offer our long-established (and utterly gorgeous) honey with CBD. It has taken a lot of work, and here it is.

You do need to be careful what you buy – especially as CBD products are expensive, simply because each plant gives up only a small amount of CBD and the extraction process is very technical and time consuming.

The first thing to look for is independently-tested laboratory analysis. If that doesn’t exist, look elsewhere. You can see ours by clicking on the link lower down the page.

Secondly, does the CBD include terpenes? There is a piece on these compounds elsewhere in the FAQS and research suggests that they are a great help in the efficacy of CBD, however it is taken.

Does the product tell you how much CBD is in what you are buying? Never mind the amount of milligrams, but what strength is it? A product might state that it’s packed with 1000mg of CBD, but it might only be 5% strength. Make sure that the packaging is crystal clear.

Does the CBD contain less than 3% THC and is therefore, entirely legal?

Has the company selling the product sprung up overnight, or is it – like Haughton Honey – long-established and reputable.

Where is the CBD produced? The CBD additive that we use is British-produced. Far be it from us to cast aspersions, but we wouldn’t go near anything cultivated in the Far East or Eastern Europe.

Terpenes

Terpenes? What are they? Well, you might not be aware of them but terpenes are all over the place; in just about every plant you can think of. Science recognises 20,000 different terpenes and there are more than a hundred different ones in the raw cannabis plant – they’re not unique to the plant; they appear in many other species.

Terpenes often give a plant its distinctive aroma, as in fruits such as oranges, and flowers such as lavender. Biologists believe that they evolved to make flowers and fruits either attractive to pollinators or repulsive to predators.

They are organic compounds, and they are crucial components in essential oils. Essential oils are a mix of terpenes and other compounds like flavonoids. Essential oils have distinct odours and properties because of their unique mix of compounds – including, of course, our friends the terpenes.

Bees make honey; honey makes happiness

The words terpenes and terpenoids are often interchanged although there are differences between them: Terpenes are hydrocarbons (consisting only of carbon and hydrogen atoms), while terpenoids are terpenes that have been denatured, often by oxidisation.

CBD is at its most effective when it contains the full range of terpenes – this is known as ‘full spectrum’ CBD – and it creates the ‘entourage’ effect, which is a phrase you’ll see elsewhere on this website. Put simply, the entourage effect is the benefit you get from ingesting multiple components of the cannabis plant together instead of ingesting one component indivually.

The terpenes compounds are lost during the extraction of the CBD from the hemp plant and have to be re-instated. Because there is a cost involved in this, and it is time-consuming, some commercial products skip it and do not contain terpenes. The CBD we infuse into Haughton Honey has all its terpenes in place and is therefore the most effective CBD you can buy.

MCT

MCT? WHAT’S THAT? Well, to put it as succinctly as possible, MCT oil is a carrier for CBD, which helps your system assimilate the CBD more efficiently. The MCT initials stand from ‘medium-chain fats’. These are saturated fat acids called triglycerides. They are easily and quickly digested, and are burned by the body so that they don’t turn into fat.

Well-known sources of MCT oils are coconut oil, palm oil, avocados, olive, sesame, and soybean – all well-regarded and healthy foods. MCT oil is also often added to salad dressings and smoothies. There are often special coffee mixes which contain MCT.

We make no medical claims, but research and anecdotal opinion have both cited MCT as being of benefit in:

  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Boosting the immune system
  • Improving digestion
  • Balancing hormones
  • Reducing stored body fat
  • Fighting bacteria and viruses

When you ingest CBD in foodstuffs such as Haughton Honey the presence of MCT allows your body to get maximum benefit from the CBD. It appears to be efficacious in itself, but is also a great facilitator so that you get the maximum boost from your CBD-infused honey.

What does ‘broad-spectrum’ mean?

Broad-spectrum CBD is minimally refined, and is extracted from a single plant that preserves the naturally-occurring cannabinoids and terpenes in the hemp and cannabis plant, except for the illegal, narcotic THC compound.

Will Haughton Honey with CBD get me high?

No.

By law CBD has to have less than 3% of the narcotic THC compound.

Will I fail a drug test while using CBD?

In a word, no.

Only THCs show up in drug tests.

Should I consult my GP?

There’s absolutely no reason not to.

Some GPs will know about the anecdotal benefits of CBD; some others may not.

Do I need to keep my honey in the fridge?
No.
With the lid well sealed and away from direct sunlight the honey will keep for ages in your kitchen cupboard.
